Geographically, Bhubaneswar is situated in the eastern coastal plains of Orissa and south-west of the Mahanadi River. The city is subdivided into a number of townships and housings.
The modern city of Bhubaneswar was designed by the German architect Otto Königsberger in 1946 and a is an happy combination of old world charms and new world comforts.

By Air The Biju Patnaik Airport in Bhubaneswar is a modern Airport with night landing facility. With the development of the new terminal building in progress it is poised for international operations in the near future. Bhubaneswar is connected to the cities of Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Vishkhapatnam, Hyderabad and Raipur through regular Flights.
By Rail To all parts of India from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. Bhubaneswar is directly connected by rail with Kolkata, Puri, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Tirupati, Thiruvanthapuram and Trichirapalli. The Eastern Freight Corridor passes through the city.
By Road The National Highway NH-5 connecting Calcutta with Chennai passes through the city. Several other National Highways like NH203, State Highways and major Arterial road originate from the city. Regular buses ply between Bhubaneswar and Berhampur, Chilka, Cuttack, Konark, Paradip, Puri Rourkela Sambalpur and other places in the State. Interstate bus services operate daily to Kolkata (West Bengal) Raipur (Chattishgarh) and Tatanagar    (Jharakhand).
